Merry Christmas all! We got you some presents! Here are a few of my fave classic Christmas songs that you either don’t hear 50 million times every year (or that I could stand hearing 50 million more) and one new song. Even if you don’t celebrate Christmas, I hope you love them. Check ’em out, load them on your ipod and hit the road to holidayland.
The first gift keeps on giving after Christmas. It’s not really a Christmas song, but one I absolutely love by someone I absolutely love. It comes with a confession; the songbird here is Lia Rose, one of my dearest friends, but also owner of one of my favorite voices. Really- like if I could only have 5 singers to listen to while trapped on a deserted island favorite.Β Former member of the band Minipop, founder of Built for the Sea, and now with Or, the Whale, Lia’s also just a short while (January, 2011) from releasing her debut solo album When You Need Me Most. I’ve heard it. It’s beautiful- and it’s packaged with non-toxic, environmentally-friendly materials.Β Lia recorded a holiday tune with her former band:
Baby It’s Cold Outside (Cover) by Built for the Sea from the albumΒ A Foggy Holiday Volume 2
Purchase Baby It’s Cold Outside here and other albums by Built for the Sea here. All are available on iTunes.
6 More Fave Classic Christmas tunes:
Father Christmas by The Kinks
Christmas Wrapping by The Waitresses
Blue Christmas by Elvis Presley (we don’t really need his last name, do we?)
The Little Drummer Boy / Peace on Earth by Bing Crosby and David Bowie
Happy Christmas (War is Over) by John Lennon & Yoko Ono with The Harlem Community Choir
Extra special Merry Christmas / Happy Holidays to you from us!
So what do you think- like our presents? π Know ’em? What are some of your favorites? Tell us about it!
Happy Christmas is one of my most favorite Christmas songs!
thanks erica- me too! happy christmas and imagine are enough to put me over the edge everytime. boo hoo hoo! π
Great songs! Some I have never heard before but now, I can add it to my Christmas playlist for next year! Though, and I may be completely lame here, Wham!’s “Last Christmas” is kind of considered essential to any Christmas playlist in my opinion. =)
thanks connie! glad i was able to turn you on to some new tunes to add to your list! and agree- “last christmas” is a sweet song. π
I did my festive playlist recently but my fiance thought that most of ’em were more like bleak, desolate winter songs! Well she prob has a point. My fave proper xmas songs are Chris Rea’s Driving home for Xmas and Bob Dylan’s Must be Santa.
oh give me the bleak, desolate winter songs- i’m a huge morrissey/the smiths fan for pete’s sake! there’s something about a crybaby man crooner that makes me so happy- ha ha. π didn’t know “driving home for xmas” and not in love with the music, but dig the lyrics & sentiment. LOVE “must be santa” how can you not giggle hearing dylan sing, “who’s gotta big red cherry nose? who laughs this way, ‘ho ho ho’?” and the accordian is over-the-top-goodness. thanks jools!
Nice picks!
Even before I came to Latin America one of my favourite was Feliz navidad by Boney M. In fact I love their entire Christmas album.
thanks ayngelina! hadn’t heard the boney m. version! just watched on youtube- so sweet & cheery! π
I have to vote for Elvis as my favorite here! π
thanks jeremy! i grew up listening to the elvis christmas album every year, and this song (not in this sexy live version!) was on it.
fond memories π
Like pics – Mind you, no list is complete without Bob Dylan’s Must Be Santa…
thanks robin! and that’s what jools said too! i may have to add it and call it a bonus π
Ok….so The Waitresses’ “Christmas Wrapping” is my holiday addiction. I know they are totally off-key but I loooove the song and play it over and over every year! π
thanks michael! me too π
Great picks! I love “Baby It’s Cold Outside,” despite it being a rather creepy song if you actually listen closely to the lyrics. Haha.
One of my favorite Christmas songs is “Wonderful Christmas Time” by Paul McCartney. It’s just so happy, and always puts a smile on my face when I hear it.
thanks amanda! glad you liked! yeah, i can see how it could be interpreted to have a creepy element. kind of like how “every breath you take” turned into a major love song when sting meant it to be stalkerish!
i hear you on “wonderful christmas time”- it’s got jingle bells!
Oh my gosh! I love “Baby It’s Cold Outside”. In fact, I’ve been humming it a lot lately! Lia does a fabulous job with it. I’ll be ordering it!
The Bing Crosby/David Bowie rendition of Little Drummer Boy is my husband’s favorite Christmas song.
that’s awesome cathy! she’ll be thrilled π and who would have thought such an unlikely duo (crosby/bowie) could be so good together, right?
I’m with Jeremy, Elvis rocks!
Have a great New Year everyone!
thanks jim! i agree- nobody else has that voice! or that…swagger! (swoon)
Hey there would you mind sharing which blog platform you’re using? I’m looking to start my own blog in the near future but I’m having a hard time selecting between BlogEngine/Wordpress/B2evolution and Drupal. The reason I ask is because your design seems different then most blogs and I’m looking for something unique. P.S Apologies for getting off-topic but I had to ask!
hi linsey, i use wordpress.org and a theme, but modified it as much as i could myself. no apologies necessary! flattered and appreciate you asking. good luck! π
An absolutely mind blowing trip! The most wanted to get ready for the road. By the way, I haven’t been to America yet. I wanted even more.
